|Matthew Bown Gallery understands contemporary art as an international exchange of ideas and practices. A consciousness of Berlin as a major centre of contemporary art and a meeting point of west and east European culture, both historically and today, informs the contribution that the gallery aims to make to the cultural life of the city. The gallery programme includes regular shows by artists from Germany, the UK and Eastern Europe. The gallery focus is on younger and less-established artists whom the gallery perceives as being capable of making a significant contribution to the contemporary conversation. Over the past year the gallery has given solo shows to Sasha Auerbakh (first solo show), Andrei Kuzkin (first solo show in Berlin), Johannes Vogl (first solo show in Berlin) and Kirk Palmer (first solo show in Berlin) and mounted the show ZŁndkerze, curated by David Thorp, which presented work by Damien Roach, Helen Marten, S Mark Gubb for the first time in Berlin. The gallery also shows established artists, particularly those investigating the formal and conceptual possibilities of the object. Over the last year the gallery has given solo shows to Richard Wilson and Monika Brandmeier.
Matthew Bown Gallery opened above the Huntsman tailor shop at 11 Savile Row, London, in 2006. At the end of 2007 the gallery was forced to close because of the expiry of its lease. The gallery re-opened in the former apartment of Bundespraesident Walter Scheel at 10 Keithstrasse, Berlin, in late 2009.
